Stoke Your Curiosity

ATI Virtual School is for students who are curious, passionate and eager to explore, learn and engage.

Do Meaningful Work

Our program inspires, empowers, and connects adolescents to our world so that they can build meaningful lives—now and into adulthood.

Explore New Ground

Too often, teens experience school as a space that hinders them from reaching their goals. The ATI Virtual program is designed to help students discover and follow the paths they truly want to pursue.

Courses

ATI Virtual School offers distinctive core courses that provide the power tools of knowledge that serve as rocket fuel for a full life. Broadly our courses explore the dimensions of human experience, thought, progress and creativity and offer the foundations for a student’s development of their understanding and relationship to the world

Students connect and apply the knowledge and skills of our courses to their own passions, interests and ideas to collaborate on projects and produce authentic work. Our students create films and write novels, find internships and start businesses, publish essays and engage in advocacy. All ATI Virtual School students engage in deliberately chosen, scaffolded, personal passion projects.

Human Nature

This course combines three strands: novel studies of classical literature, deep analysis of and engagement with modern artifacts of pop culture, and explicit study of philosophy and the liberal arts. The classical literature program has been developed over the years by experts in Great Books approaches and the history of literature, all with the primary aim of fostering discussion and thought on moral reflection, the self, and the human condition.

The modern portion of the program uses the Theory of Enchantment, a diverse curriculum of self-reflection and social-emotional learning that focuses on building the moral foundations needed to grapple with the toughest contemporary issues of identity and society. Students who are later in high school engage with our liberal arts program, a philosophical survey of the humanities—political economy, psychology, sociology, the humanistic applications of the natural sciences, and more. This course provides a sweeping, rich foundation in the humanities that nurtures a lifetime of intellectual curiosity and engagement with the deepest issues that human beings face.

The History of Progress

Our history course is an integration of our Progress Studies for Young Scholars program into a wider course on intellectual history. The questions that drive this course concern the nature of human progress: how is it that we have in the past—and continue to—overcome threats and challenges and imperfections, material and intellectual and moral?

What can we learn from the past about exactly how we innovated in governance, science, technology, economic structures, and moral ideals and advocacy? How does that help explain the present—and what are the implications for the future?

Mathematics

Our math course focuses on truly understanding the foundations of math. We use a combination of Montessori resources and proprietary curriculum to bring math to life, to enable students to see math in the world around them. This is facilitated both by a historical perspective on the development and application of math, and by an unapologetic focus on how math gets translated by modern microchips into an extremely flexible logic, viz. computer programming, that serves as an algorithmic version of human thought.

Montessori wrote that “intelligence today is no longer natural but mathematical,” and, four score years later, that is truer than ever. Mathematics is simultaneously (1) an invaluable resource for shaping the structure of one’s basic analytic thinking capacity, (2) a source of rich content for understanding the quantitative relationships in the world, and (3) being integrated at an accelerated rate into life through information technology and the analyses that this enables.

Science Workshop

In science we explore the big, foundational ideas in science: mechanics, energy physics, and evolutionary theory. We read historical texts by Newton, Darwin, Galvani, and others. And we engage in independent research and activities that cement our understanding.

The science workshop is coupled with the study of science and engineering that happens in the History of Progress course. This class is an opportunity to replicate and extend the innovations of others so as to better understand them ourselves—and to better appreciate the method by which we go from evidence to causes, and from a background context of knowledge and material resources to prototypes and invention.

Human Creativity

Survey and practice of a range of art disciplines with an historical lens

Human beings have a remarkable capacity for creativity and for translating imagination and vision into expression through a range of practices. This course will survey human creativity from early drawings and paintings, to sculpture and architecture, to music and film and modern digital art.

We will explore and apply the principles that inform our desire to produce things of beauty and imagination to life. We will develop and hone our own artistic skills and develop our own creative style that draws on foundational techniques and allows students to adapt and innovate to express their unique creative voice.

A community of work

We believe, as Maria Montessori did, that adolescents benefit by doing difficult work that is held to real standards and represents a real accomplishment—as opposed to exclusively work that was evaluated by school standards and an academic credential. We believe in the power of adolescents to start accomplishing things in their lives and to start shaping the world around them.

In addition to our core classes, our community is based around workshopping and collaborating on projects. Our students create films and write novels, find internships and start businesses, publish essays and engage in advocacy. All ATI virtual students engage in deliberately chosen, personal passion projects.

Supporting students with their core academic course work and their individual passion projects are our coaches. Each student has a coach that helps them create and navigate their own path. The coach both helps her find local opportunities and resources, and connects her with the wider ATI network to find mentors and opportunities that represent actionable, ambitious next steps for her pursuits.
